Cybercrime ecosystem

 

Few months ago we wrote a short article on the estimated value of cybercrime market (see here for more information) after what many hacktivist groups have emerged or become more popular.

Lulzsec is one of them and its spring of attacks made the first lines in many countries. But, according to the following article, they might be the less of your hacker worries…

Although their attacks went public and were over mediatized, they remained technically simple (mostly based on SQL injection, a flaw that has been exploited over more than a decade now) and were mostly seeking to embarrass companies, individuals, and government agencies in order to make a statement (such as let WikiLeaks alone, for Anonymous).

Those active groups under the spot lights groups are hiding a more disturbing market where cybercrooks often work in organized crime syndicates like the Mafia. Some defraud banks, and many others are government agents that spy on foreign entities and corporations.

They threaten our financial systems, our economy, and our national security, what are much more valuable assets.

All in all, just have a safe journey on the Internet.
